Memorial Weekend in NYC

This was a terrific weekend. The weather was hot and sunny! We were finally done with our schoolwork for the term! And I went to NYC to see my friend Barbie, her boyfriend Duane, and also my brother Ben, and sister-in-law, Kelly.
Barbie, Duane, Jim and I did the double-decker bus tour of uptown, and Kelly and Ben made some awesome food. Ben and Kelly had gotten this GYNORMOUS flat panel TV and were laid back. The trusty FungWah got us there, but I think we'll lay off that for a while. It was a good time, and relaxing to get away from the stress of school. You can see the Memorial Day Weekend
pictures here.

here's to a great start to our summer!

Gigantic Crunchies from Montreal

In April, Jim presented his poster at CHI 2006 in beautiful Montreal. You can see us romping around Montreal. We had a terrific time, especially when we went to the IGA Louis Menard Marche and found these gynormous crunchies!
We also got a tour of XSLabs, thanks to Joey and Vincent! Whoo hoo! See Christine's blog for more pix.

What a weekend!

This was a pretty busy weekend. We managed to see a few movies, and I saw the Flavor of Love reunion (a disappointment but still a train wreck all the same). It was CPW, so the campus was full of frosh. I waded through them to go to my Tae Kwon Do practice, and it was a hard day of practice, but fun. I learned a new form. Practiced jumping backwheel kicks for the first time. Its a moment of weightlessness as you whip your leg backwards to the target. Cool time, though, and I am still sore. Need bananas.

I look forward to finishing fixing up the Shuttle machine and bringing it to lab to do heavy duty in our office. Its in tatters, but it works now, and I think it'll do well as a cad/demo machine. Its got a TV tuner in it, but I will have to wait to see if I can resurrect that. That's what you get when you inherit a broke machine.

I picked up the 3rd book from the Well of Echoes Series again. I was only meaning to read a few pages, and ended up plowing through 100 pages to the 3rd chapter. It was intense. I gotta be careful! Its addictive.

Yams is waiting for me to log into Animal Xing DS, and I have got to go to bestbuy to pick it up. Will do that soon!!! Can't believe the weekend went by so fast...

Dec 25, 2005 Christmas Around the World at Epcot

This year, our families tried something new. We went to experience Christmas Around the World at Epcot. The best part was staying together and eating a bite in every country. We had German Bratwurst, French Pastries, Japanese Wasabi Peas, English Fish & Chips. All a good time. :) I drove for approximately 460 miles. It was fun and the best part is enjoying the holidays! So festive, so exciting!

Virginia's birthday Bash

Happy Birthday Virginia! We had a terrific time dining at Sauce, with Virginia. In attendance was her sister, Carol, who was visiting from Florida. The next day we went to celebrate with a yummy dim sum trip and also saw Harry Potter.

Dinner with Nick

Nick now has a nice car and lives in NY. Nick happened to be around Cambridge Cambridge Cambridge, so we ended up going to Gandhi to celebrate. Gandhi's in central square is one of the best places to go for an Indian dinner. I like their "complete dinner" because I always love the coconut soup, popadum, and galub jamun. Big thumbs up on the dinner. The leftovers didn't last!

And Sometimes, the Island Is Marooned on You

It seems that there are nice floating islands out there, and a few folks like to keep them that way. Marvel at how surprising mother nature is, and how wild and large changes can occur through simple phenomena, such as plants dying. Floating islands in Massachusetts sure make you want to visit one, no?

Wollemia - the pinosaur

Wollemi from Michael Quinion's World Wide Words newsletter "MOST ANCIENT OF TREES Last Sunday, examples of that extraordinary
tree the Wollemi pine were auctioned in Sydney. The Wollemi is an
incredible rarity, a survivor of ancient times, the coelacanth of
the botanical world. It was found in 1994 in the Wollemi National
Park outside Sydney. Newspapers call it the "pinosaur" because it
has survived from the time of the dinosaurs 250 million years ago."
Awesome!

Happy Birthday Jim!

Yangtze River Restaurant

Because of the rainy weather, we decided to settle for a trip to the Yangtze River Restaurant in Lexington. I got up too late to go bowling, but it was nice to join everyone for lunch.
This is the second time I've visited, and I still think the food is only okay. Their lunch buffett was not good, and I am pretty happy they had a dimsum option. The had a dim-sum cart, but the dim sum was between good and mediocre. The experience was weird in that they had all the different dimsum food on ONE cart, instead of different carts. The taro cake was nice and soft, and the stuffed pepper was tasty. However, the cha-shiu-bao was a little hard on the outside (so I had to peel the skin), and the rice noodle was also hard (maybe it was too late in the day).
It was also nice because of the traditional foods (congee and fried dough), and Liwei, Mandy, Etty, and Dennis were great company. The desserts were really good, and I had my fill of coconut sticky rice, taro-coconut soup, tofu flower, tofu milk. The decor was nice, and the waitstaff spoke correct cantonese (which was NOT the case the first time I went there during the lunch crowd). I was suitably relaxed to because the waitstaff was very attentive, polite, and they seemed very professional. My preferred Dim Sum place is still Emperor's Garden in Boston Chinatown.

There's diamonds in dem hills!

Last weekend we went scratching for Diamonds at Herkeimer. Them pickins were mighty slim, but it was a good time. I got blisters on both thumbs, but the experience was terrific. Jim, he is a natural geomancer, and he done taught me the sekrit of finding a good rock! Yee haw, bash away bash away all!

Ela and Arrin's Wedding Sept. 9, 2005 at the Habitat

Congratulations to Ela and Arrin. It was a really awesome gala, with tons of unique touches. The Habitat gardens were lovely, and it was nice to see so much greenery. Besides the beautiful setting and terrific mediterranean food, the storytelling was exquisite. Ela's hand was in all the designs, from the custom invites, the natural setting, the gorgeous dress and handmade jewelry, to the traditional Israeli repast. Arrin's friends are very funny, and told some terrific stories! Lily did a terrific job with the flowers, and it was nice to spend time talking to the people at our table: Shanti, Vivian, Lily, Ben, Audrey, Thuy, Jenny, and her new husband! Rain had us in stitches with a hilarious poem. We were also treated to an exotic belly dancing tribute by the beautiful Polina, and a song by another of Arrin's friends. I saw tons of MIT alumni in attendance, and everyone was so nice. We had a great time! Here's to the happy couple! Additional Congratulations to Rain and Byron! You guys rock for getting off your honeymoon plane just to be in attendance!

Today TMG demoed at the AIGA design conference. Nice to meet some folks from AIGA's head office in NY (kieran w. and friends) It was different, and I got tons of paper samples. The people were friendly, and were interested in the electronics we demoed. It was interesting to see the world of the Graphic Artist. Lots of stuff about paper printing...

Deck Prisms on the Charles W. Morgan

Recently we went to the Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum to see what kind of pirate booty could be found in Key West. We came across an interesting glass pyramid called a Deck Prism. The museum had many cool tangible demos, one was a gold bar that you could lift to feel how heavy it was. Another demo was a comparison of a few different sizes of canon balls that you could lift. I also enjoyed seeing the gold boullion, cross-section of the ship's hull and smelling the spices being traded. The movie was a little hokey, but it was nice to know that Mel Fisher was a nice guy. "today's the day!" All in all, it was a delight to the senses. I highly recommend this museum if you are into Pirate Treasure! Arrgggg! Keep searching, everyone, you'll find it!

chilling in the UK

We got to London on last Wednesday, after my last day at Mot. Had a terrific time with Ian and hanging out near South Kensington. It was so nice meeting Ian's friends/roommates and soaking up the RCA 'end of year show' and various UK vibes. We must have walked 30+ miles around London, and the chance meeting with the Polish guy at the bus stop was cool. I will always remember fruit pastilles as the perfect walking accompaniment.

We took the train to Ledbury from Paddington on Monday, and it was nice to stay over with Jim's folks again. The wedding happens on Saturday, so we're all preparing for then. Looking forward to R&R. :) Can you manage...?

Man and Speech

Today I got to run with the alumni running club. It was a fun 2.6 mile river run, and the day was nice-- not too hot in the morning. I had a terrific time.
Afterwards went to Chris and Shen's bbq and then relaxed home with a browse through Diane Ackerman's A natural history of the senses. She mentions the story of the Jaguar of Sweet Laughter. This is a creation myth found in the Mayan Sacred book, Popol Vuh: Popol Vuh: Part III: III. Chapter 2. It explains that the first human creatures to appear on earth were "Jaguar of Sweet Laughter", "Black Jaguar", "Jaguar of the Night" and "Mahucutah, the Not-Brushed", with one thing in common: all could speak. This lead me to look up this article on how humans acquired the power of speech. "The essential elements of the story remain the same: the ability to make words appeared spontaneously, in full bloom, without ties to man's biological past. "

Chapter 12: " At the point the blood turned and scurried away was where I cut those sound cues of my fingertips on the shower wall, called 'Tentacles tk-2.' I wonder what eerie and horrifying moments we could have conjured up instead of the traditional cliche lion growls and bear roars we were compelled to use in the final confrontation between Kurt Russell and the mutant Thing."

Dance to the Piper by Agnes de Mille: A-1 Women's Discount Bookstore

One of my favorite paragraphs is from this book: Dance to the Piper by Agnes de Mille: A-1 Women's Discount Bookstore.
Anna Pavlova! My life stops as I write that name. Across the daily preoccupation of lessons, lunch boxes, tooth brushings and quarrelings with Margaret flashed this bright, unworldly experience and burned in a single afternoon a path over which I could never retrace my steps. I had witnessed the power of beauty, and in some chamber of my heart I lost forever my irresponsibility. I was as clearly marked as though she had looked me in the face and called my name." MIT Wearables Show: Be There or B[] :: SEAMLESS

seamless is a fashion event featuring innovative and experimental works in computational apparel design, interactive clothing, and technology-based fashion. each project [re]interprets the conceptual goal of a seamless relationship between technology and fashion. these are real clothes that inspire and provoke. In short, this was the first student run wearables fashion show at the Media lab. It was pretty good, with emphasis on the technology. There was participation from Parsons, RISD and ofcourse, the Media Lab (I especially liked the pump shoes by Amanda Parkes). Take a look at the some of the concepts. The demos were compelling because the feedback was instant. It was nice to run into Elise Co, who had designed the lumi bracelet... doesn't everyone love "tangible" light?

Happy Friday the 13th... Triskaidekaphobes

Muahahaha- it's a good day to watch scary movies!
From Word of the Day: Triskaidekaphobia is a fairly new word (first found in print
in 1911) formed from Greek treiskaideka, triskaideka,
"thirteen" (treis, "three" + kai, "and" + deka, "ten") +
phobos, "fear." The adjective form is triskaidekaphobic. One
who fears the number 13 is a triskaidekaphobe or
triskaidekaphobic.

There are many [2]theories about the origin of
triskaidekaphobia. In medieval Christian countries the number
13 came to be considered unlucky because there were 13 persons
at the Last Supper of Christ. Fridays are also unlucky,
because the Crucifixion was on a Friday. Hence a Friday
falling on the thirteenth day would be regarded as especially
unlucky.
Some famous triskaidekaphobes1:
* Napoleon
* Herbert Hoover
* Mark Twain
* Richard Wagner
* Franklin Roosevelt

Friday," [3]Daily Telegraph, September 8, 1996

Pia and William Chuang's Wedding in Rhinebeck, NY May 7, 2005

It's the season for my friends to get married or engaged. This was a rather full weekend, as Jim and I drove the 3.5 hours to Pia and William Chuang's Wedding in Rhinebeck, NY. The ceremony took place in a little church and was very nice. The wedding reception was at a historic mansion, full of MIT alums.

Betsy and many others flew out from California to hang out and celebrate. It was an east-meets-west coast kind of MIT reunion. My favorite part was when best-man Duff made his toast, and said "Sorry ladies, William is officially off the market" and Tong, his wife sighed out loud "Oh-NO!"-- that made the speech even more funny! (Congratulations to Duff and Tong on getting hitched just a few weeks ago!) I also enjoyed the flappy tent, and hanging out with Cheryl and Greg Yantz. Congratulations you two, on your engagement. Finally, it was just fun to dance with everyone. I saw Rena, Art, and Pat McCormick on the dance floor while I was doing the bee dance. Yay, party favors were honey pots-- just what a busy bee like me loves! Buzz Buzz!

It is always exciting and fun to meet all the nice people from years past, and be reminded of just how cool MIT, and the people there were/are! William is of course, awesome, and a hub for many different people, and Pia seems pretty awesome as well. Again, congrats to William and Pia, they are two of a kind!

Our adventure didn't end after the reception. We had to drive back from Rhinebeck to Boston, but we were low on gas. It was just about 11PM, and we thought that the NY Taconic Parkway would have gas stations open... but NO! Most of the towns we pulled into didn't even have any lightbulbs burning. Not until we were praying (and boy had we been part of a lot of praying that day-- also a lot of leg bumping (but that's another story)), and hanging on until we reached the Mass Pike did we find an open gas station. I'm telling, PoDunk is really no place for a city gal like me. Isn't there a law that at least one gas station in the state should be open all night? Ah well, it was funny anyway.

We got home around 3AM, and I have to say, there ain't nothing like sleeping late in your own bed.

I finally got to add some old pics from Jim's Birthday Oct 2002 onto my picture site. Finally added Gongke's bday pix 2005 from earlier this year. Note that the bday cake decorated by Jim, celebrates the amount of snow Boston had to shove this year... Next up is Nick's bday coming soon!
