Dim Sum, Art, and Princess Diaries 2
This weekend, went to Dim Sum at Emperor's Garden with Rich, Virginia, Sopps, Jim, Tuan, Seewee, Nick and Shen. Met Etienne, who has an art project where he takes recycled American electronics and teaches people in south america how to hack. Then we were full, and some of us headed to get bubble tea, others went to see the Princess Diaries 2. Julie Andrews is certainly regal! :)

DIS2004 | Paper sessions | Designing Interactive Systems
Today I attended first day of DIS2004 | Paper sessions | Designing Interactive Systems, and enjoyed learning and meeting a ton of people. Met some people from Art Center in California, some people from Viktoria Institute and many other artists. You will be psyched to know that some of the people from my old group won prizes in the Design Awards. :) Awesome!

Today was the opening registration day for DIS2004. Finally got to meet so many of the people who's paper's I've read. So that is cool! :) Hyun had everything in control on the exhibit floor, and Paul was on top of things. Had a coffee with Dan and got to see the infamous Nico. Conor flew in late, and got to talk to him. Also Jonah introduced me to Jo and Helen from Turbulence who are pioneers in digital art. Still have to go get my visa photos taken... maybe tomorrow.

Dinos ducks and geese
It was a great puttin' and paddling weekend. I was feeling down on Friday, but then Roo was here, and we went to go putting and paddling with Virginia and Jim, Nick, Sopps n Shen. First it was miniature golf on Route 1, and then a trip to Kelly's, where Jim found the Miracle Road to avoid that crazy traffic. Then we went to see the World's Fair, got some pulled pork. Just the perfect pre-canoeing lunch. We canoed up the Charles and got food in Watertown, saw the weir and came back. A satisfying, and fun weekend.

Peter Pan is a bully, The Chicken Run ROCKS
Boston.com / Business / Peter Pan is a bully: "business, using vans to drive his fellow immigrants to their jobs in New York City. Business booms. Pretty soon Pei Lin Liang is running cut-rate, no-frills bus service between Boston and New York. The appeal could not be simpler: $10 one way.
The customers love it -- and not just Asians, but anyone looking to save a buck, particularly the young. What Southwest Airlines did to the economics of air fares, Liang's little bus line, Fung Wah Bus, is now doing to the established order of the I-95 bus business. And in an era of overpaid chief executives, Liang, who speaks little English and lives in New York, still drives a bus regularly."

Fourth east and The Rock
Tonight we saw The Rock (1996) at LSC. Vimal organized it, and we had rice krispies desserts while chatting to Slugfest. Familiar faces and good entertainment. What more could you ask for? Also got to see the first episode of Monk on the projection in the Goodale Lounge. It was good, a bit sad. Can't believe Vimal and Kathy and gang have graduated! Has it been 4 years already???

Hellomoto Racing Yacht Sets Sail
Today we got to get a close look at the Hellomoto boat. Hellomoto Racing Yacht Sets Sail and came into harbor in Boston last weekend. Moto had a reception at Rowes Wharf. I think its quite exciting that these young people can dedicate their lives to this sport. This race was a 14 day solo race, and the only contact with others was an Iridium phone. The boat was very pretty and besides being nicely painted, seemed to have lots of cool tech. There were at least 8 solar panels and 3 anemometers. There were also catamarans and tri-cats in the harbor, which were quite interesting to look at.
Dinner at the Union Oyster House
So we're sitting in Faneuil Hall, eating fish and chips at Union Oyster House, Boston. Apparently it's America's Oldest Restaurant. The food was good though. Good dinner for a nice night.

How to Remove Comment notes from BlogSpeak Javascript Errors
I take no responsibility for people who don't back up their site. I would save a backup copy first, and then remove the comment stuff from BlogSpeak(because it generates javascript errors).
First, log onto your Blogger.com account. Go to the Blog template and delete the lines that have anything to do with blogSpeak. Also need to delete the stuff having to do with $BlogComment stuff.
Most obvious is the line that starts with "script" and has blogspeak in the line.
Next is the ItemPage section that has "BlogComments" references in it.
Delete beginning from <ItemPage> to <ItemPage> of that section.

Adele Naude Santos, MIT's new dean of Architecture
After a nice dinner at Outback with Jim's parents, I was delighted to receive my latest issue of PLAN. It listed the new dean of Architecture, Adele Naude Santos, and some pics of her buildings. I really enjoyed reading about it. Later, I found a good site, by an MIT student called not to scale . a journal of thoughts on architecture. Interesting ways to glimpse what's going on in the MIT Architecture department. Anyway, her buildings look way cool, and I like the idea of landscape blending into a building.

EWG Report || Focus Pocus
EWG Report || Focus Pocus: "came under immediate fire from independent scientists and public health activists for failing to adopt the recommendations of a National Academy of Sciences study on mercury (NAS 2000), and for not providing pregnant women with complete information on what fish to avoid during pregnancy - particularly tuna.
Speaking to the press in May 2001, Dr. Robert Goyer, chairman of the NAS committee on mercury toxicity, criticized the Agency's health advisory for mercury, saying 'The F.D.A. should be providing people with the best information and let them be the judge. The F.D.A. has stopped short of what it should have done.'
Newly-available, internal FDA documents obtained by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveal that FDA, under pressure from the seafood industry, is deliberately withholding critical information from pregnant women on mercury-contaminated tuna and other fish, and using 'focus group' sessions as a justification. CHI 2004: April 24-29 | Vienna, Austria
Just got back from my trip toCHI 2004: April 24-29 | Vienna, Austria. It was nice that this year, people were way more accepting of ambient communication and telepresence. It was a bonus to see so many telepresence projects, and instead of hearing questions on the merits of such work, noting the acceptance and queries about the research. Also, the SV party was rocking! They had the German DJ pumping out techno and people dancing on the tables by the end of the night. The best part was when the Chairs got up and danced, after people shouted "more more more" so that the DJ would do an encore. What a conference!

Alvin Ailey show
Sometimes, I wonder at how awesome my friends are. Sarah, whom I grew up with, but hadn't seen in a while, invited me to watch her cousin perform. Bonus! Her cuz is a dancer in the Alvin Ailey dance troupe. We got great seats, and the performance was awesome! I had been to this show once before, but we were further back. This time, we were in the orchestra, and the performance was amazing. I had grown up reading about Katherine Dunham, so Alvin Ailey holds a special place in my heart... Double bonus, we got to meet her cousin and some friends. My first time meeting real dancers. They were just as beautiful off the stage as they were on the stage. Suffice it to say, I went to bed with a large moony smile on my face.

#17 Unbroken
To22 project: #17 Unbroken
We have all broken something by accident. For most of us, the pieces go right into the trash. But to22 saw broken pottery as a great design opportunity. "Most people see broken objects such as dishes as useless. Instead we saw that something wonderful was revealed. It's about a second life- and what better way to have these qualities noticed than by placing them right out in the open, in the middle of your life? Your dining table is the place where you converse, the place where you share and this design was created to be the centerpiece

Cummins, Inc.-- Global economy strains loyalty in company town
I bet the same is happening all over the country, companies struggling with the global economy, and towns struggling because of it. Global economy strains loyalty in company town (Columbus, Indiana). I used to work at Cummins, and I have always thought it was a very good company. It was always impressive to see how community-based, and value oriented it was. It is hard to see it going through tough times, but I think they will survive. Likewise, I am hopeful that the new changes will make the townspeople more able to compete, and that a new equilibrium finds its place.
